When you start a fundraiser for SQSH, you join a grassroots movement of people who draw on our personal networks to contribute to systemic change. All funds you raise will support SQSH’s mission to strengthen the St. Louis queer/LGBTQIA+ community.

Hey you! Yes you! Hi, hello, I’m so happy you’re here, and hope this article finds you well.
As SQSH matures as an organization, we plan to grow our capacity to support and empower our community to heal and flourish. In order to accomplish our collective goals, we would be so grateful for your help!
SQSH is a grassroots organization, led by queer and trans St. Louisans, funded significantly by individual donations. SQSH believes in community-centric fundraising, which works to dismantle class systems and value all donors regardless of donation size. Community-Centric Fundraising is a fundraising model that prioritizes the entire community over individual organizations, fosters a sense of belonging and interdependence, presents our work not as individual transactions but holistically, and encourages mutual support between nonprofits (CCF Website). Since our founding in 2019, SQSH has received much of our grassroots funding from donations by local businesses, groups of performers, and fundraisers by individuals (like me)!
Even “small amounts” can help to fund SQSH’s most crucial programs. Did you know that $15 funds one queer community anthology? That $25 funds one month of Peer Support Line phone bills? That $100 funds one community-building event? With our community’s dedication and support, we can grow and improve the capacity and sustainability of our programs – like our Peer Support Line, SQSHBook Resource Guide, STARLING Healing Justice Collective, and more!
“But Kelsey,” you might think, “asking people for money is super awkward!”
Yeah, that’s true and so valid. I struggled with that, too. When I reached out directly to a handful of people who I had a good feeling about contributing, I found that taking the time to personalize and connect with people – even through social media posts – was an effective way to garner support for my fundraiser.
“Huh, okay. That does sound like something I can do. So where do I start?”
I’m so glad you asked! I present to you: Kelsey’s Super Unofficial Step-by-Step Grassroots Fundraiser Planning Guide:

My $1,000 goal was the first decision I made related to my fundraiser. I used my 30th birthday, which happened to be during Pride Month, to give my friends and family a special occasion to donate to SQSH.

I used Facebook’s Birthday Fundraiser feature to collect donations so that I didn’t have to worry about the transfer from my account to SQSH, but there are so many other ways to collect donations:
Collect donations into your personal account/money app, then donate all the funds to SQSH at the end
Share SQSH’s donation platforms (Venmo, CashApp, PayPal), and ask supporters to donate directly to SQSH, maybe with a fun memo specific to your fundraiser (e.g. “Kelsey’s 30th Birthday Bucks”)
Collect cash donations, then deposit them into a bank account – or email financial@thesqsh.org to organize your drop-off to SQSH staff

My entire fundraiser took place on social media, i.e. Instagram with cross-posts to Facebook. This is where I had fun taking photos, writing silly captions, and engaging in personal storytelling and relationship building. Direct asks of personal contacts i.e. direct messaging or texting to ask for donations
Tapping on local networks e.g. at a market or event where you’re tabling for your small business

There were days during my fundraiser where I didn’t get donations at all. And I’m here to tell you (and past Kelsey) that it’s okay! Hosting a fundraiser can be really challenging to begin with. That you’ve decided to try means the world to us – whether you raise $10 or $1,000. We recognize that not everyone is in the position to donate, and that our queer community is disproportionately affected by poverty, un/underemployment, and housing insecurity. On that note, I would like to especially invite the White, cisgender/heterosexual allies reading this piece to consider what organizing your own grassroots fundraiser might look like this year.
I know that donating to causes you believe in can feel like drops in a bucket; but as just one person doing a birthday fundraiser, I was able to individually raise $1,310 for SQSH in one month! That’s enough money to pay SQSH’s Peer Support Line phone bill for over two years!
In the end, grassroots community-centric fundraising is just one way that you can get involved in and support SQSH’s work. June 2024
The RUDIS Leather Society hosts an annual fundraiser called Hell on Heels, and SQSH was chosen to be their beneficiary!
Hell on Heels included a duet competition that teamed up people in the leather community with people from the drag community. The competition was hosted by three judges including our staff member Bee! They also had raffles, shot sales, and other activities. They donated 60% of the funds to SQSH.

March 2024
Betty's Books fundraised in honor of the Trans Rights Readathon and TDV, and donated a portion of sales proceeds from their Read Trans Books collection.

Sugarwitch Ice Cream Sandwiches

In Feb 2024, Sugarwitch hosted a trans Valentines fundraiser in support of SQSH & MTUG! They decked the bakery out in Valentines/love letters to trans loved ones, elders, and community as well as supplied folks to mail their letters out.
Amidst the ‘23 MO AG ruling restricting trans Missourians’ access to gender-affirming healthcare and other anti-trans legislation, Sugarwitch fundraised and matched up to $1000 in donations to SQSH! These funds resourced SQSH’s team to host a Trans Mutual Aid & Healing Circle, and supported our Peer Support Line, SQSHBook, & Outreach Team to expand supports for trans Missourians.

St. Louis Fantasy Maps
December 2023
Many of St. Louis Fantasy Maps’ creations played in the magical world of Harry Potter. However, in light of JK Rowling’s increasingly hateful & transphobic platform, Fantasy Maps wanted to stop selling/promoting this part of their work – while clearing the remaining stock on their shelves. They hosted a final sale on all Potter-themed creations and donated all of the profit to SQSH!

PROMO Urbanaire
December 2023
This year PROMO brought back their signature event, Urbanaire, and asked attendees to invest in our collective organizational ecosystem / donate towards coalition partners that have been in this fight alongside PROMO.
“PROMO knows our ecosystem is stronger when we stand in collective unity as the spark which will ignite the revolution our state needs to create a Missouri where every trans individual is supported, where every queer person is safely housed, where every LGBTQ adult is protected from employment discrimination, where every Black and Brown resident is safe from state violence, and where all queer people — each and every one of us — are valued and thriving.”
Alongside SQSH, PROMO also donated funds raised at Urbanaire to Black Pride St. Louis, THISTL, MTUG, The GLO Center, and MO HO Justice.

Macramé Mouse is a STL-based small business focused on handmade macramé. For Tower Grove Pride, they created a variety of pieces & colorways inspired by the Rainbow, Lesbian, Trans, Bi, and Pan pride flag, and donated profits from this Pride collection to SQSH! They also displayed SQSH materials at their booth for shoppers to learn more about SQSH and our mission.

Fun by the Bay is a local small business focused on sensory play dough. For Tower Grove Pride, they made rainbow dough kits and donated 50% of the profit + 10% of overall sales to SQSH! Here's why they chose to support SQSH: "I was looking for a local STL based LGBTQ+ charity and yours stood out to me. A loved one struggled with substance use and relied on the local help lines to guide them. We are a huge proponent of what y’all are doing. So thank you."

APA of MO Pride Shirts
June – December 2023
Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA of MO) is dedicated to bringing people and pets together through adoption, education, pet health care, and more.
With everything that happened during Missouri Legislative Session targeting the transgender community, APA of MO decided to sell PRIDE T-shirts and donate all proceeds to SQSH! They sold them throughout the year since PRIDE spans over many months and communities in the St. Louis area.

Humans of St. Louis
Humans of St. Louis (HOSTL) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that shares first-person stories and photographic portraits featuring people and places throughout St. Louis.
During their initial crowdfunding campaign, HOSTL promised to commit a portion of book sale proceeds to a different St. Louis cause / organization every month for the first year. Their book team & Board chose 12 organizations to support – including SQSH! "I've heard many mentions of SQSH in interviews I've done throughout the city too. Continue the great work y'all do in STL!"

Cavetown at Bittersweet Daze
July 2023
This Is Home Project is a foundation whose focus is to help LGBTQ+ youth in need. They are the project of an artist named Cavetown, a trans musician with a large queer audience.
Over the summer, Cavetown went on a tour across the US called Bittersweet Daze with mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery and grantperez. They wanted to host a local LGBTQ+ organization at every show to let their audience know there are orgs in place in their cities to support them.
For their STL stop at St. Louis Music Park, Bittersweet Daze hosted & donated to SQSH! SQSH members set up a tent at the venue with information on our mission & resources, gave a speech, and announced the raffle winners of a signed guitar!

Participants created a community work of art made of just bread and jams! The Crack Fox hosted a fun evening of drag and karaoke as we celebrated the 30th birthday, and return from retirement, of Simon Saize!Performers included Aiden Control, Cadaver Daddy-o, Dickie Rebellion, Duchess, Elden Bliss, Harley Love, Landon Control, Midas Swell, and Roxxy Misbehavin.
We raised $151 in raffle tickets and $900 in ticket sales, with several performers even donating their show pay back to the cause.

Held on Oct 7, 2022, TRANScendence Sound Bath provided a space for trans St. Louisans to experience the healing power of sound with a live, in-person experience featuring crystal singing bowls, metal singing bowls, and other sound healing instruments.

To celebrate my birthday, I am raising money for SQSH! SQSH’s programs use a peer-based, community-driven approach to provide support, education, and advocacy for queer St. Louisans to thrive. Research shows that at least 61.6% of St. Louisans have experienced violence or victimization due to queerphobia over their lifetime. SQSH works to provide emotional support, resource referrals, education and advocacy for queer St. Louisans, because gender- and sexuality-based oppression affects everyone, especially LGBTQIA+ individuals living in hostile or under-resourced environments.
We know that the St. Louis queer community faces higher rates of violence, discrimination, housing insecurity and substance use, as well as medical, mental and sexual health disparities. We also face additional barriers to accessing the identity-affirming resources needed to meet those needs.
Everyone benefits from a community that is more affirming and accepting of diversity, fluidity, and exploration in our gender, sexuality, and relationship identities.
